Kent insight into Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011 was a busy time for Kent Foundation and Kent’s young entrepreneurs. The week saw several enterprising events and inspirational activities in support of Kent’s young entrepreneurs. It was a week of celebration!

Liam Behn invited young enterprising students from Canterbury and St. Omer France to meet up and celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week. Liam said: ‘Researching a new service for Under Eighteen Entrepreneurs is an exciting new focus for us. By going international we are able to reach and inspire young entrepreneurs from both sides of the channel.’

NEW Shop Opens in Canterbury!
Dishal Patel opened his first CEX store in Ashford 2010. The store became so successful, that Dishal opened his second CEX store in Canterbury. We have supported Dishal through Test Trading and he said, “Kent Foundation has been great with advice, networking events, and the initial help from test trading was personally very useful. From my experience the Kent Foundation was the only group that actually paid any attention to me and my plans. The first few months were very tough, I worked the first six month for 7 days a week without a day off. I did have moments along the way where I would wonder what I had got myself into, but would always focus on the bigger picture and my long term goals.’

Youth Business International and the Global Entrepreneurship Team congratulated Kent Foundation on the important work we are doing to help build and inspire the businesses of tomorrow. In recognition of our work we received a High Impact Badge of Honour! and were delighted when Kent County Council Cabinet Member, Kevin Lynes, presented us with our award.

Our local radio invited young entrepreneurs to talk about their experiences in starting and succeeding in business. and I joined in the LIVE debate to advocate that young people should take the Fourth Option - being an entrepreneur as a career option and also spoke about the values of entrepreneurship to young people and to the County of Kent.

Stuart Tanton and Simon Woods met with enterprising students at the Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate, to kick start an enterprising journey. Stuart commented that “Using the knowledge and skills we’ve gained from working with young business people we challenged the students to explore what it would take for them to become their own boss (and some of the skills they would need). The students enjoyed and learnt a lot from this interactive workshop. There are some incredibly talented students at the Marlowe Academy, undoubtedly some will grow to become the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders… and we’re proud to play our part in their development. This was an inspiring way to kick start Global Entrepreneurship Week and build businesses for tomorrow”.

I hope you have enjoyed having an insight into what Kent's young people have achieved during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all GEW supporters and participants. We could not have done it without you.

Kind regards

You're hired - ex apprentices show their support for council campaign

Two ex apprentices turned entrepreneurs are the latest business owners to take a Medway apprentice under their wing as part of the 100 in 100 apprenticeship campaign.

Daniel Mills and Daniel Everard set up their own business, D2 Electrical Ltd, in September 2009, three years after gaining their own City and Guilds electrical apprenticeships through JTL Training.

The pair, both from Medway, are no strangers to learning the ropes as an apprentice themselves, and as business picks up they’ve decided to give an aspiring electrician the same opportunity.

"We decided to take on an apprentice to expand our growing business" said Daniel Mills, 26.

"Having an apprentice can massively help out an electrician while out on site. Jobs can be completed quicker and two sets of hands are always helpful. We also felt we should give an opportunity to a young lad who is keen to get into a very competitive industry."

The business recruited 16 year old George Tilbury as their apprentice last month and he has already been put to work.

"Since starting with us George has carried out many jobs under the supervision of an electrician. He’s obviously been making the teas, but he’s also swept up, clipped cables, pulled in heavy armoured cables and generally helped us out. As a company that carries out a wide variety of work, George will benefit and gain a lot of experience."

George, from High Street, Halling, will attend Mid Kent College once a week to train and will spend the rest of his time on site working with the electricians.

"I’ve always wanted to learn a trade and doing an apprenticeship seemed like the best way to get started because it’s so hands on and you get straight to work" he said.

"I’m enjoying getting out and about with the team, meeting people and learning new skills and hope I’ll be able to stay with the company for some time once I’m qualified."

D2 Electrical Ltd, based on Lingley Drive, Wainscott, carry out various electrical works including domestic, commercial, industrial, 24/7 emergency call outs and planned maintenance works.

They are approved by the Medway Fair Trader scheme and recently completed work at the new Krystals nightclub and Vanity Bar in Chatham.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Development and Economic Growth, Cllr Jane Chitty, said: "It’s great to see two former apprentices who have worked hard and are succeeding in business giving something back by taking on a young person, who’s looking to follow in their footsteps.

"It’s also a great testimony to the fact that apprenticeships work, by giving young people with drive and ambition the chance to develop their skills and providing businesses with new talent geared to help them expand."

The council run 100 in 100 Apprenticeship Challenge launched in May to attract local businesses to take on - as the name suggests - 100 apprentices in 100 days. The challenge is due to come to an end this month and has to date beaten targets with more than 140 pledges.

Council announces major cash boost for apprenticeships

Medway Council has announced details of a £200,000 fund for apprenticeships to help businesses and young people in Medway get the skills they need to grow.

The fund is the latest measure announced by the council to boost the number of apprenticeships in Medway and will provide local businesses with a wage or training subsidy of £2,000 to support them taking on an apprentice.

The council is contributing £100,000 to the subsidy, which is being matched by EU funds with the aim of supporting 90 apprenticeships between now and March 2012.

Paid directly to the training provider for the apprentice, the subsidy can be used to either help the employer pay the apprentice's wages, or if they are over 19, will go towards their training costs.

The government will fund the training of any apprentice aged between 16 and 18 years old. From the age of 19 to 24 years old, the government will fund 50 per cent of training costs.

Targeted towards businesses with less than 50 employees across a range of priority sectors, from construction and engineering to horticulture, travel and tourism and creative industries, the subsidy aims to help bolster economic growth in the area while tackling youth unemployment.

The fund is the most recent investment in apprentices in Medway, and will follow on from the 100 in 100 Apprenticeship Challenge, launched in May to attract local businesses to take on - as the name suggests - 100 apprentices in 100 days.

Businesses who have pledged as part of the 100 in 100 campaign and fall within the criteria for the subsidy will also be able to apply for the grant. The grant will be limited to two apprentices per company.

The council's Employ Medway team will work alongside the Connexions Service to help identify possible candidates for an apprenticeships, such as young people who are unemployed and looking for work.

Leader of Medway Council, Cllr Rodney Chambers, said: "As a former apprentice myself, I can only speak too highly of the real value of an apprenticeship. They are not only good for people who want get ahead and gain invaluable skills, but they're also good for business and for the growth of our economy in Medway.

"We really are committed to driving up economic growth here in Medway and giving both businesses and the apprentices themselves, the tools they need to grow, develop skills and succeed."

Teenagers from 30 schools across Kent will discover just how their love for phones and computer games could act as a gateway to a rewarding career developing the next generation of must-have gadgets at a special event in the county next month.

Some 300 youngsters are expected to attend TeenTech, an experience designed to highlight the exciting potential of careers in science, engineering and technology, which takes place at The River Centre in Tonbridge on September 27.

Scientists and engineers from some of the UK’s top technology companies will be on hand to show off their latest gadgets and show students just how the skills they already have can be developed into a successful career.

Launched by the IoD South in the Berkshire area, the first Kent event, run by the Kent Education Business Partnership, will be hosted by TeenTech co-founder and former Tomorrow’s World presenter Maggie Philbin, who said: “There is a dangerous complacency about the UK skills' shortage. The South East is vital to UK economic growth, so having the right people with relevant skills is very important. Students, teachers and parents have very outdated ideas about the career opportunities in emerging industries. Most teenagers have never met a scientist or an engineer. When I asked one class if they could give me the name of any contemporary scientist, engineer or technologist, the only name they came up with was Einstein. We need to change these perceptions because they hold back young people and they will ultimately effect the economy.”

Adrian Wenn, Education Officer of the Kent branch of the IoD, said: “TeenTech has proved to be a great success elsewhere in the south region and we are delighted to be able to bring it to Kent. Young people today have a greater understanding of technology than they probably realise. TeenTech will help to show them that it is just a short step from using their everyday gadgets to a rewarding and challenging career.”

Judges Paul Barron - Director of Kent Foundation and Graham Brown of Denne Construction had the hard task of deciding the winner of the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. They were looking for a number of factors for the award and were assessing the entrepreneur and not their business. It was not just about profits either they were looking for individuals with creativity determination and vision. A high standard of applications received showing the potential of a lot of Kent's Young Entrepreneurs. Arriving at the final decision was not easy and deciding the finalists proved difficult let alone the overall winner with narrow margins between them.

Medway teenagers take on the apprenticeship challenge

Two Medway teenagers have become the latest recruits under Medway’s 100 in 100 Apprenticeship Challenge.

Jack Humphrey, 16, and Harri Stevenson, 18, have been taken on as apprentices at R Swain and Sons Ltd as part of a council led campaign to increase the number of businesses in Medway offering apprenticeships.

The young apprentices have started at the Strood based haulage company this month, where they will undertake advanced apprenticeships of up to three years. "Doing an apprenticeship sets you up for a career and a future with a company" said Harri, from Rochester.

"Finding work can be really difficult at my age. I think this scheme’s a good idea as it will encourage employers to take on apprentices, and I think as young people, we can offer a lot to a business, as we grow to know it inside out."

For Jack, from Strood, taking up the apprenticeship at Swain was continuing a family tradition with the company where his uncle and grandfather have worked. "I think it’s important that young people do an apprenticeship instead of going straight into work because you get a qualification and a good grounding in a company, their values and the way they work" he said.

"It’s something my family have done and I’m looking forward to following in their footsteps."

Mainstream Training, one of the many training providers championing the 100 in 100 scheme, will support Harri and Jack to gain their full HGV driving licences as well as Key Skills qualifications in numeracy and literacy.

Paul Burridge, the company’s Commercial Director, said apprentices are key to the company and it’s values. "They are the future of our company and indeed our industry. All our apprentices gain a recognised qualification and at the same time get some real hands on experience, from washing vehicles on their first day to gaining a fully fledged HGV licence and a position with the firm."

The Medway 100 in 100 Apprenticeship Challenge launched in May and is aimed at encouraging more businesses in Medway to take on apprentices and realise the benefits they can bring to their company.

As the campaign heads towards the half way point it is already well ahead of target with more than 50 Medway businesses pledging to take on one or more apprentices.

These range from doctors surgeries and decorators to hairdressers and construction companies.

There are currently more than 1,500 apprentices in Medway with around 200 different courses on offer. This is expected to increase in coming years as the statutory age for young people to remain in education or training increases from 16 years to 17 in 2013 and 18 in 2015.

The council has joined forces with the National Apprenticeship Service to run the challenge, which aims to attract businesses of all sizes, across all sectors, and will give anyone aged 16 and above the chance to gain trade skills and a recognised qualification, while earning a wage.

Leader of Medway Council, Cllr Rodney Chambers, said: "This campaign is about reviving and championing the esteemed tradition of apprenticeships, that were once at the heart of developing our local workforce here in Medway.

"I’m pleased to see so many businesses pledging support and some already reaping the many benefits apprenticeships bring."

The Success Sessions strode gallantly forward this month as we were joined by Robert de Fougerolles.

Robert is Canadian born but was proud to tell us of his British ancestry and Kent roots and his delight of having lived here since the mid 1990’s. Before moving to the UK Robert worked in a number of successful multi-national firms and brands, commonly in the position of finance and general management. During this session Robert spoke about How to Buy a Company and What it takes to be an Entrepreneur

As a promise to himself Robert bought his own business when he was 35 in order to become master of his own destiny. He expanded the plant hire company he acquired to become #1 in Canada and #12 in America before selling to a large multi-national. Since that time Robert has founded and served as Chairman on a number of boards of companies and has managed a number of corporate turn-arounds.

As his experience suggests, Robert has a wealth of knowledge about entrepreneurship and success and I was delighted that he agreed to share this with Kent Association of Young Entrepreneurs (KAYE) and IoD members at the Success Sessions.

The Success Sessions are a key part of KAYE’s mission to support business people who are running their own company, seriously considering starting up in business or working their way up the corporate ladder. The event is intended to inspire and educate people on what it takes to be a success and Robert certainly did that.

What it takes to be an Entrepreneur

After some personal anecdotes about his first business – as a young teenager repairing and driving boats on the lakes in Canada – Robert offered his observations on what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur

1. An entrepreneur is someone who is not easily influenced by peer pressure. Classically immigrants make successful entrepreneur because they have less immediate local peer pressure and a need to succeed as other avenues of employment are not always open to them.

2. You need health and energy.

3. Multi-tasking and enterprise over pure intelligence - women make great entrepreneurs. And you need to be luckier than you are smart!

4. Money is not the issue and neither is bankruptcy. To fail is ok. It is the fear of failure that stops people.

5. Entrepreneurs have to have passion about what they do and the service they are providing.

6. Entrepreneurs need to be sellers. It has become the word that no-one wants to be called. But you have to be a seller.

7. Be introspective enough to be able to wake at three in the morning and realise if it simply isn’t working.

8. You need to enjoy yourself and have fun. If you’re not enjoying it don’t do it. Make a note of the day you decide this and mark it for six months later in your diary. If you are still not happy when that day arrives, then consider that it’s time to move on.

9. Moving up the corporate ladder can, in itself, be a form of entrepreneurship. Know what it takes to influence people and then become the CEO.

10. The biggest fallacy is that you buy/grow a business to have money. But you don’t get any until you sell it. All the time the business is growing the money is being used up for additional working capital.

How To Buy A Company

As an entrepreneur who has bought companies and turned failing businesses into a success, Robert had lively views on the opportunities that may be available in the current economic climate. Whether through insolvency or acquisition Robert offered tips on buying a business. As always in the Success Sessions they were told around personal experience and great stories from Robert’s life.

“Preparation, as you might presume, is very important” began Robert. “It is a lot easier to get into a business that it is to get out. Make sure the business will provide what you need long term. You can’t chuck it in like a job. Most start-ups lose money in the first year and your plans will over-run from 12 months to 18 months. Be prepared for that eventuality. Set up some criteria of your personal needs that are critical to you and then some ‘nice to haves’.”

Some of Roberts critical factors when he bought the plant hire business included:

· “I wanted a large customer base. When I was selling to the supermarkets there were only three majors. They made us jump through hoops. Horrible!”

· “I wanted plenty of supplier options. Too few and they have too much control over you.”

· “Location. I had to be based in Montreal.”

· “Commitments. I had a family and two children so I had to have a steady income.”

With your decision and requirements clearly defined, Robert went on to share his considerable experience in acquiring companies. He expanded on the need to be prepared and to be focused in the areas of raising finance and buying someone’s business from them.

“When you go to see a business investor, remember they will only successfully choose one in 30 or so investment opportunities. They don’t have time to mess around with amateurs. Know what you want and have the information to back it up.”

“When you are buying a business and meet the vendor, convince him that you can run his baby. You need a checklist to run through as a way to talk to the person. Ask the right question at the right time and he will give you a straight answer. Ask the same question later on and he will be preoccupied with the impact of his answer on his asking price.”

Robert was clear that when buying someone’s business you have to ask the right questions, in the right order and at the right time. Get it wrong and you could get the wrong deal. Robert has his questions and he outlined them for us:

1. Growth - it takes a courageous man to buy a business where there is no growth. Ask about growth.

2. Product - see whether it is really a useful product. You need to be comfortable with the product. If you can’t see yourself selling it then it isn’t for you.

3. Market - find out about the market. What are the dynamics - suppliers and buyers? Never get caught in a situation where you have to bribe, cajole or be put upon by others in order to succeed.

4. Timings - know the right time to get into markets....and when not to.

5. Channels of distribution - important, otherwise you get controlled. They have you by the throat.

6. Finance - if you have your own business you have to know some accounting. It is the language by which you can follow a business. Know how to read a balance sheet “I can tell how old a truck fleet is by a balance sheet and therefore what replacement costs are headed my way”.

7. Management - key, because very often the owner may be selling for a particular reason such as their children don’t want to take it on. If the owner is surrounded by people who started the business with him then they may all leave at the same time. If they are all young they may also leave for different reasons, namely to quickly become competitors . Neither of these scenarios is ideal.

8. Know what product to kill - discontinue the sacred cows if you have to. Big organisations find this hard if senior stakeholder doesn’t want to close it. Then companies get into trouble, someone else takes over and all the sacred cows go....along with lots of jobs. The company’s workers often come to the correct conclusion before senior management recognise it as well. If you can, ask them what needs fixing.

The session concluded with a number of questions, which were answered with more candid insights into Roberts’s life and his experience.

It was another great evening. Bruce Bell from Perfectly Clear Marketing said of the event

“The Success Session with Robert was inspiring. To get business tips and guidance told around personal experiences is priceless. I really enjoyed the format and learnt a lot from Robert; I certainly recommend the Kent business community come along to the next session.”

Be sure not to miss the next Success Sessions with Cliff Hardcastle on April 19th at Clydesdale Bank, 5 Tolherst Court, Turkey Mill, Ashford Road, Maidstone, Kent, ME14 5SF.

What is success?

I don’t know. I have had it though, I know that. I got picked for the school rugby team. I completed a triathlon. She said yes. I won a raffle. Is that success?

The problem with success is that it comes in many shapes and sizes. When you are starting up a business success can seem like a long way off. Critically we are not always aware of having success. The day you decided to start you own business, for example, is a hugely successful day but not everyone would celebrate it as such. So how do you know? How do know when to celebrate and use that positive affirmation to move on to the next success?

This is a question or indeed subject that the Success Sessions sets out to answer. I had the idea for this series of events after reading The Dip by Seth Godin. In his book Seth encourages us to realise that the ‘dip’ is the loss of energy and faith that happens just before we break through into success. It is the moment when we have banked the most amount of risk for the least amount of return. We throw in the towel or change direction just before we hit the big time.

Fortunately there are many who have been there before. To learn from such people is a great opportunity and KAYE (the Kent Association of Young Entrepreneur’s) invited members of the Kent Ambassador group to come and share their experiences with the business community of Kent.

In March at the Canterbury Innovation Centre, Mr Richard Oldfield did just that. The evening kicked off with networking and drinks for guests, after which we got comfortable to hear Richard share with us.

Richard is a successful investment fund manager. He was trained in the school of Mercury and SG Warburg, was chief executive of Alta Advisors, a major family fund, and now runs his own fund, Oldfield Partners. In Kent he has held the role of High Sheriff, Trustee of Leeds Castle and Canterbury Cathedral and is currently President of Demelza House Children’s Hospice. For all Success Sessions it is this breadth and depth of experience that offers the most amount of insight and inspiration.

The format is relaxed and informal – you could call it a ‘fireside’ chat. Richard is stood at the front, no presentation, telling his story. Richard shares his experience of running the investment fund for Tetra Pak founders the Rauslings, through to the day he decided to set up his own fund and go it alone. The high and low points are eloquently placed amongst his tips for being an entrepreneur, which included:

In his last Budget before a much-anticipated General Election, and with the UK emerging from the 'deepest global recession for over 60 years', Chancellor Alistair Darling faced a delicate balancing act as he outlined a series of measures aimed at tackling the deficit while supporting economic recovery.

Reiterating his plan to halve the deficit within four years, the Chancellor revised his borrowing forecast for 2009/10 downwards from £178 billion to £167 billion, but also downgraded the economic growth forecast for 2011 to 3-3.5%.

A £2.5 billion small business package aimed at boosting skills and innovation was also unveiled, with a temporary increase in small business rate relief taking effect from October, in addition to a doubling of the Annual Investment Allowance and the Entrepreneurs' Relief lifetime limit.

The planned rise in fuel duty scheduled for April will now be phased in between April and January 2011. Duty on wine, beer and spirits will rise by 2% a year until 2013, while duty on cider will increase by 10% and tobacco duty will rise by 1%.

Entrepreneurs handed route-map through legal minefield by Law Society

The Law Society has reacted to the worrying statistic that 1 in 120 active companies are going into liquidation by advising budding 'dragons' to seek legal advice on regulations to consider before investing precious finances during the downturn.

The recession is causing a spike in interest in setting up small businesses as newly jobless people, flush with redundancy money, are flooding to workshops on how to set up a business while others are taking the opportunity to purchase existing business that are going up for sale.
One of the reasons many businesses fail is a lack of planning beforehand. A solicitor will be able to help budding entrepreneurs by raising the important questions that need to be considered when pursuing a business ambition. The Law Society is reminding would-be Donald Trumps that thorough planning and proper legal advice is crucial.

The start-up sector is proving to be more resilient than expected because many start-ups grow from small entities and don't need to borrow large amounts of money from banks to begin with, which is an advantage as businesses would find it difficult to secure loans from the bank at the moment anyway. However they are using money from redundancy packages or borrowing finance from friends and family until they have an established businesses with orders on their books.

Law Society President Robert Heslett said, "With the recession sparking new business ideas it is vital to save time and money by seeking clear, simple, and trustworthy advice from a solicitor who can help with preparing a legally compliant business plan and ensure compliance with finance, health and safety, employment and tax laws. Advice from a specialist solicitor can help with compliance with legislation such as environmental laws and understand regulations in particular sectors to enhance the chances of building a successful business.

"The costs involved with breaching some of the red-tape involved in running a business could cripple a newly established enterprise. With small businesses lacking the security to guarantee a small loan they are using precious redundancy money or borrowing from friends and family so the need to alleviate as many risks as possible is crucial. Seeking advice from a solicitor at an early stage could help alleviate some of the risks for anyone looking to start-up and a solicitor can help draft a loan arrangement with friends and family."

The advice comes as the Law Society has launched an information campaign to make consumers in England and Wales aware of how solicitors can help them solve a wide range of problems.
Legal issues to consider when starting up a business: http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/documents/downloads/12091_lfyb_startbusweb2.pdf

The YOUR SOLICITOR, QUALIFIED TO ANSWER campaign will run from September 21 to November 21, and is aimed at encouraging consumers to use solicitors by highlighting the kinds of problems they can help with and how having the right legal information can help save money, time or heartache and often all three.

http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/choosingandusing/commonlegalproblems.law
The campaign focuses on the reassurance to be gained by seeking advice from a properly qualified professional, using the strap line ‘Your solicitor – qualified to answer’. The advertisements identify situations in which people need legal help. The headline - "Help, I need somebody" – will be familiar to most, and the call to action is ‘Find a solicitor’.

From office to home office

Now her own boss and loving the daily thrill it brings, Monika Mileszczyk of Hassle 3 Concierge & Lifestyle Management, tells the story of how she manages corporate employment by day and self-employment by night. It’s a great read for anyone who’s starting out in business whilst keeping hold of a job.

Working Girl

I had an amazing job for one of the biggest financial newspapers in the UK, the Financial Times. But it was whilst in this job, looking after corporate clients in the City, that I decided I desperately needed a change.

From the beginning of my professional career, I always saw myself as a sales person; energetic, enthusiastic, and driven by revenue and bonuses, running the rat race with 100 mph. When I got bored, I would simply look for another job and new challenges. But a couple of months into a new job and I’d be looking for adrenaline kicks yet again. I never seemed to be truly happy and would get bored very quickly.

I can now see that planning my new venture during lunch hours was what kept me going. The prospect of being my own boss and doing things that I would enjoy made me really happy.
My own Boss

Coming up with an idea didn’t take long. After considering my experience and passions I knew I wanted to become a lifestyle manager. Now I had to start turning it into reality.

I set myself goals and deadlines to keep on track with everything – I still had my day job to fund my new venture so I was aware I would face some challenges like time management…I also knew I would overcome them.

It’s been almost two years now. I have done countless amount of research into lifestyle management, where to look for prospective clients, building a website and designing a logo, finding a suitable accountant and more. I started sharing my expertise on my blog and some of my tips have been recognised by Enterprise Nation! There is still so much to learn but I am determined to turn my dream into reality. I am still planning on keeping my day job (yes, a different one!) and running my business in the evenings and weekends. It will be hard but I am determined to turn it into successful venture.

Top Tips

Here is how it worked for me:

    * Professional guidance – Book half-day holiday to enrol for HMRC course for start-ups to make sure you do it right form the start. It helped me to decide on company structure and gave me good general understanding of what to expect.
    * Business Link – provides you with all information you will ever need to run your business. I spent a few evenings a week reading it and making notes. My partner was happy to offer help if needed and it was good to have someone to bounce the ideas off. You can also print variety of guidelines and read them on the train if you commute.
    * Ideas - newspapers, glossy magazines and specialist publications – I looked everywhere for inspirations for my business and how to target my clients.
    * Website - thanks to Enterprise Nation I found a small company that provides variety of straightforward and easy to use templates. I used my lunch hours to research the competitor's websites to decide on the look and feel of mine. Transferring my ideas into the template took a couple of hours over the weekend and I kept updating the content with new information in the evenings until my website was ready.
    * Linked In – treat it as a great business tool. I found friends running their own businesses willing to give me advice and offer help.

It was that simple. If I was going to give one advice to people in full-time job longing to run their business like I did, it would be to listen to your heart and just go for it. Do some planning and research and stick to it.

You will be frustrated at times, tired and sometimes might wonder what on earth you are doing but trust me, it will all be worth it. In the process you will build your confidence and develop what it takes to become a successful young entrepreneur and small business owner. And this is the best feeling in the world.

    * Based in Kent, Hassle 3 Concierge & Lifestyle Management helps busy people and their families to enjoy life.

Centre to woo more women into self-employment

Women are being encouraged to set up in business at a centre being set up just for them.

Chatham is to be home to the first Women’s Business Centre in the UK to offer free advice to female would-be entrepreneurs.

The centre, due to formally open next month, is part of a campaign over many years to woo more women into self-employment and to recognise the crucial role they can play in turning round the economy.

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) is pumping £700,000 into the project over the next two years. The new centre in Chatham High Street was previously Medway Enterprise Gateway, an organisation that helped creative businesses.

SEEDA chief executive Pam Alexander said: "It will be dedicated to supporting women across the region from disadvantaged and hard to reach communities, and SEEDA will provide £700k over the next two years for the project, which will include facilities for networking, events and training. In the South East, there is an enormous untapped potential for women entrepreneurs to help boost the economy."

Shriti Vadera, Minister for Economic Competitiveness and Small Business, added: "Getting more women entrepreneurs is an economic issue not just an equality issue. There is a wealth of untapped talent and economic opportunity that could significantly boost the economy in these uncertain times."

Ms Alexander called on private and public sectors to do more to support women to start businesses during the recession, urging them to give access to finance and procurement opportunities.

SEEDA says that national evidence shows that women-owned businesses start with lower levels of overall capitalisation and debt and are much less likely to use external sources of finance.

Women starting up in business tend to provide a more immediate contribution to the economy as around one in five women come into self-employment from unemployment compared with around one in fifteen for men.

SEEDA is launching the South East Women Business Services (SEWBS) through the Business Link Service later this year, as well as "What’s Stopping You" events aimed at helping women build confidence when starting up their own businesses.

By Kent Messenger Business Editor Trevor Sturgess. http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/newsarchive.aspx?articleid=59450

KAYE's Roundtable Proves a Hit All Round

The fourth round table business clinic, organised by KAYE – the Kent Association of Young Entrepreneurs – has built on previous successes, with delegates claiming it to be one of the most useful business events of its kind.

Introduced as part of the organisation’s fast expanding events diary, the Roundtable offers members the opportunity to discuss and debate different aspects of the business and gain invaluable guidance, advice and support.

Hosted by Clydesdale Bank Plc at its premises in Turkey Mill, Maidstone, the event included topics such as ‘how to get to the decision maker?’, ‘how can I attract larger clients?’ and ‘how can I effectively utilise the local media?’ – all of which were suggested by delegates.

“It was by far one of the most useful business events I have been to. The event attracted a good mixture of people, all of whom had a positive input on the proceedings,” commented Mark Lilliot of Clydesdale Bank.

“One of the major benefits from my point of view was to be able to listen to the broad range of experiences from other business people in the room. I feel that there are not normally enough opportunities for younger businesses to access this level of expertise. This event provided a really good opportunity to discuss specific business problems in a relaxed and informal setting.”

The roundtable event forms just part of a continued programme run by KAYE, the only organisation of its kind to be affiliated to the IoD (the Institute of Directors). Led by Kent’s young entrepreneurs, it is committed to nurturing the county’s next generation of leading business men and women.

Future roundtable events are already being planned, with each event being chaired by a different prominent Kent business leader. Theses events will be free to KAYE members and £5.00 for non members.

As part of its goal to becoming the leading support mechanism for young entrepreneurs in the south east, KAYE – the Kent Association of Young Entrepreneurs – has announced new partnerships with the Kent Foundation and the University

As part of the partnerships, from September, KAYE will be looking to hold regular events in Canterbury at the University of Kent campus. These events will be in addition to the KAYE events regularly held in Kings Hill, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells. In time, these may be extended to the University’s Medway campus.

“The partnerships with the Kent Foundation and the University of Kent are part of our continued growth,” commented David Ing, Managing Director of CFA Marketing Communications and Chairman of KAYE.

“As well as reaching new members such as students at the University and organisations currently working with the Kent Foundation, the partnerships will also allow us to extend our monthly events to other parts of the counties.”

Funded by Kent County Council, the Kent Foundation is a Kent charity that aims to support young people aged 18 or over who want to start up a business or be self-employed, but don't know where to start.
New Leader for Kent's Young Entrepreneurs

The Kent Association for Young Entrepreneurs (KAYE) has appointed David Ing, Managing Director of Maidstone marketing agency, CFA Marketing Communications, as its new Chairman.

David’s promotion follows his three year involvement with the unique organisation, which is supported by the Kent branch of the Institute of Directors (IOD). He takes over from Jo Ostermeyer of Creaseys LLP, Chartered Accountants. To date, his extensive marketing knowledge has been used to increase public and media awareness for the group; an area he aims to continue improving.

David commented: “My immediate plan is to increase the number of opportunities KAYE offers young local business people by creating a buzz within the county. This includes more events, with greater diversity and a wider spread throughout Kent. These will range from our ever popular speed networking and roundtable events to new ideas, such as wine tasting and pub quizzes.

“KAYE is the perfect vehicle for young people to network, share ideas and, most importantly, work together to boost the local economy. It’s a welcome escape from the stuffiness of old-fashioned business networking.

On handing over the Chair to David, Jo commented “When I recruited David onto the KAYE committee I knew his marketing expertise and business acumen would be a great boost to KAYE. I know that I am passing on my position, not only to a safe pair of hands, but also to a person with great ideas for the future of KAYE. I will continue to be involved with the committee and will certainly give David my full support.”

David’s new role makes him a full committee member for the Kent Branch of the Institute of Directors. He is also now the Kent representative for the recently launched Young Directors Forum – an IOD initiative aimed at helping develop and represent young business leaders.

KAYE, the only organisation of its kind in the country, is committed to helping the county’s ambitious, young entrepreneurs. The organisation runs monthly events for members including speed networking, roundtable and other informal networking opportunities.

Can Kent's Entrepreneurial Spirit Prosper?

If you were asked to describe someone who had an entrepreneurial spirit, images of power suits, fast-paced lifestyles, and cut-throat businessmen with unbridled ambition in the 80s may spring to mind. However, today’s entrepreneurs would no doubt see themselves as being a far cry from their counterparts of 20 years ago.

But what about the entrepreneurs of the future – are we doing enough to foster the creative and entrepreneurial flair that the UK economy needs to flourish?

In Kent, the spirit of enterprise is certainly alive and well thanks to IoD’s Kent Association of Young Entrepreneurs - KAYE. Created nearly four years ago, KAYE was the brainchild of Alyson Howard, former IoD Kent chairman and Margaret Pearson, formerly with the Kent Prince’s Trust. The organisation now has over 130 members.

Jo Ostermeyer, chairman of KAYE explains why she became involved. “I felt that young entrepreneurial business people in Kent were not being well represented and that this was my opportunity to help the cause along. KAYE’s aim is to provide support, advice and mentoring for people that have started or are looking to start their own business. It is equally relevant to those people who are working in larger organisations and wishing to climb the corporate ladder. It is also a good outlet to meet like minded people. The idea is that its fits somewhere between the Prince’s Trust and the IoD. We have a lot of members who have been through the Prince’s Trust and but feel they are too young for the IoD.

“We have some excellent young well-known entrepreneurs on our committee over the first four years including James Evans of First Car and Izzy Jones of the Cleaning Clinic as well as young professionals. Since I have been involved I have seen the organisation go from strength-to-strength and I am looking forward to watching it grow even further!”

Recently Clydesdale Bank and Giles Insurance Brokers Ltd announced their sponsorship and support for KAYE helping the organisation move forward and ensuring that the entrepreneurial spirit in Kent continues.

Chris Winning, managing partner at Clydesdale Bank’s Financial Solutions Centre in Tunbridge Wells, said. “Many of today’s entrepreneurs aren’t simply driven by their profit margins – instead focusing on their working culture, lifestyle and having fun. And unlike many of the ‘maverick’ entrepreneurs of the 80s, they seem keen to embrace their social conscience.”

Understandably, many young people connect stuffy businessmen in suits with running their own business and this needs to change. Our future business leaders realise that their interest – be that DJ-ing, jewellery-making or gardening – could be turned into a lucrative commercial opportunity has to be central to securing the future of British enterprise.”

British entrepreneurship isn’t down and out and we are confident that through the support of Clydesdale Bank and Giles Insurance Ltd for KAYE the county will be well represented when it comes to keeping the light of British enterprise burning brightly.”

Explaining why Giles Insurance Brokers Ltd decided to get involved, Howard Pearson, managing director (South Region), said: “Giles is one of the top independent insurance brokers in the UK and we are a dynamic, customer-focused company. Encouraging young people to start and develop businesses is core to our hearts at Giles, and the KAYE sponsorship enables us to demonstrate this by direct involvement. We thoroughly enjoy our participation from the networking events and the awards dinner in Canterbury."

Another organisation in Kent helping young people, particularly young entrepreneurs, is The Kent Foundation. Director, Paul Baron explains how: “We hope to use KAYE members as a reference point for our members – getting them to pass on their experiences. Our mission is to ensure that young people in Kent get the support they need to be successful in starting and growing their businesses, in turn contributing to the overall success of Kent.”

Ice is Nice at Networking Event

Business people from across Kent were able to break the ice thanks to the Institute of Directors & KAYE, which hosted a networking event with a frosty reception.

Teams gathered at Fenton’s Rink on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells to take part in an evening of curling. The game, particularly popular in Scotland, see teams trying to slide 44lb granite stones into a scoring target known as the house.

The Kent branch of the IoD organised the event held at England’s first and only dedicated curling rink and after an evening of friendly battle the team of Bruce Bell, from Blue Sun World, Ian Painter, from Buryfield Grange Ltd and Georgina Harrison, from Creaseys came out on top.

KAYE Chairman Jo Ostermeyer said: “It was great to be able to try something new and the event was a fantastic way for people to come together socially and network as well. The sport of curling really lends itself to teamwork as everyone is always involved and helping each other to try and get the best result.”

Blind Ambition of Inspirational Alderton

Adapt, improvise and overcome was the message from inspirational blind speed skier Kevin Alderton, when he addressed a packed room at the Institute of Directors Business Breakfast at the Kent County Show.

The skier, who has a world record speed of 100.94mph to his name, told his amazing tale of overcoming disability to achieve his dreams. As a platoon sergeant and military ski instructor, Kevin had served his country all over the world in the Gulf, Belize, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. However, his career and life hit rock bottom when he lost virtually all his sight in a street attack at the age of 28.

Despite several operations nothing could be done to restore his sight and he was registered blind with vision of around five per cent. After several low points he got his life back on track through the charity St Dunstan’s, which helps blind ex-service men and women.

From there he got the opportunity to ski again and after being inspired by fellow soldier Billy Baxter, who lost his sight in Bosnia and went on to set a motorbike record, Kevin decided to take up speed skiing.

He now holds records indoors and out and is also part of Great Britain squad as well as representing his country in downhill, slalom, giant slalom and Super G. He is aiming to make the team for the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver and is targeting nothing less than gold.

He said: “It’s about change, opportunity and commitment - people see my story as inspirational but it is just my story. We are human beings and we adapt, improvise and overcome in life - it’s all part of own tapestry. You can’t change yesterday but you can change tomorrow.”

KAYE Chairman Jo Ostermeyer said: “Kevin’s tale was an inspiring story of how human beings can achieve their goals no matter what adversity or obstacles lie in their path. He had a room full of business people and entrepreneurs spellbound with the story of his life and how he had come be a world record breaker. Everyone can take something from Kevin’s story and apply it in some small way to their own ambitions and dreams.”
