'Socialise' to Improve Your Business

By Jonnie Jenson, To Be Social on Tuesday, January 18th, 2011. Filed under Social Media.

The Internet and how people use it has changed. The phenomena known as social media is changing the way people interact with each other and more importantly, how they interact with businesses. Social media services like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are driven by communities of people with shared interests and the ability to quickly and easily talk with each other. Today when people search for, and buy, goods or choose where to eat or go on holiday, they make their decisions based not on what the company says about the product but what other people are saying about it.

Sean Gorman from the Corporate Team at Brachers LLP in Maidstone agrees "Traditionally, businesses have chosen to work with other businesses on recommendation but with the advent of social media it enables users to gain a better understanding of both individuals and their companies. They are able to see whom they maybe working with and how successful they are. If social media continues to be embraced by the business community, it will become its most powerful marketing tool."

Currently, social media is the number one pastime for people using the internet with sites like Facebook and Twitter accounting for 22.7% of time spent on the web. Over 500 million people are on Facebook (nearly 30 million in the UK), and over 70 million are on LinkedIn. 85% of the UK population is online and 65% of those have a profile on one or more social media sites.

All this means it is no longer enough to simply have a website. You need to take your business to these communities. Right now and every second of the day people are sharing, commenting, raving and complaining about your business or subjects relevant to your business. If you want to get noticed and influence the conversation you need to be part of it - after all it's happening anyway!

One company who is embracing social media as part of its marketing progamme is Wilkins Kennedy, Claire PeersClaire Peers Director of Marketing explains: "The popularity of using digital and social media in the workplace has been growing over the past few years and we are in the process of launching the Wilkins Kennedy Twitter account to keep followers up to date with company news as well as offering helpful business advice and tips. Linked posts on Twitter are useful in directing followers to your website and newsworthy re-tweets extend the audience reach further and increase follower numbers. Many of our staff use the professional networking site LinkedIn to keep in touch with business contacts and increase networking opportunities throughout the UK and overseas."
