Top Tips To Get You Started Using Social Media

By Jonnie Jenson, To Be Social on Tuesday, January 18th, 2011. Filed under Social Media.

Jonnie Jenson, social media strategist and trainer from To Be Social explains his top tips to get you started using social media to improve your business.

Protection: But how do companies protect themselves and their brands when using social media? Many companies are worried about venturing out into social media worry about people saying something negative. Whilst this is a valid concern it should encourage you to fix that what you are scared of people talking about rather than try to hide from it. So, get it fixed and then get active.

Be clear on your objectives before you start: decide whom you want to talk to and what you want to encourage them to do. You don't have to respond to every mention of your business online.

Create a social media policy: decide what you and your staff will and won't talk about (whilst giving them the freedom to be themselves). Work out how often you will be active online and tell people up front. Aim to be as open as possible but create an email or phone process for dealing with problems privately, however, always try to conclude it back in the public domain.

Register your company name: even if you don't plan to use it yet try to get your business or brand name on the popular services.

Moderate don't censor: you will not win fans or build a community by pulling down comments you don't like. An angry customer who is ignored will get louder. One who is listened and responded to constructively will likely become an advocate.

Stay calm, don't get personal: if at any time you find yourself particularly agitated by someone engaging with you online take timeout before responding. The internet never forgets and even if you delete an overzealous response you gave to someone, it could have already been copied and shared around the World.

Someone pretending to be you? Contact them and find out what they are trying to achieve, politely ask them to stop. If they don't and it is really a problem contact the service provider.
